Spicy Prawns Coconut Fry Recipe for Goan-style prawns paired with fresh grated coconut made using very simple pantry ingredients that you definitely have right now – great as a side dish to complete a simple home cooked meal.
You know the days when you come home after a particularly irritating day at work – where none of your plans work, and everything is too chaotic. Thats when I miss living with family. Walking through the door, to smells of food wafting through the kitchen, knowing that pretty soon, a plate of warm home food will somehow make it all better.
We don’t have that luxury here – a long day means you order in if there’s no time to cook. Personally, I despise ordering in. That is because, I love eating out so much, the experience of it all. Ambience, fine china, browsing through the menus, possible combinations and optimising how M and I can try the best of what the restaurant has to offer. Ordering in just kinda takes the fun out of it!
So it was one such mundane day, that I came home dreading ordering in. I didnt have too many ingredients in the fridge that day, except these plump prawns. I had no recipe in mind, and wanted to steer clear of the usual recipes ( partly because I didnt have some of the necessary ingredients). So I started tossing ingredients together. Pepper went into the marinade to give a kick to the turmeric & chilli, the coconut was an after thought (brilliant), when the prawns were almost 3/4th done. But I did stick to some of my favorite basics – there was garlic, loads of chilli powder & garnished with a heavy hand of chopped coriander.
Sometimes, all you need is a few things – to make something lip smackingly good!
- 400 gms Prawns (cleaned and deveined)
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp pepper powder
- 8 - 10 curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp garlic (minced)
- 2 green chillies (sliced)
- 3 tbsps coconut Fresh grated
- 1 tbsp coriander Fresh (finely chopped)
- to taste salt
Marinate the prawns with salt, turmeric, chilli and pepper powder.
Heat oil. Add curry leaves, green chillies and garlic paste and fry until fragrant.
Add the marinated prawns and stir fry till 3/4 done (let them sear a little so don't cover the pan).
Add fresh grated coconut and turn off in a minute.
Garnish with fresh coriander.
